Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are complex health conditions that can negatively affect both the physical and emotional well-being of those who suffer from them. As a trusted therapist in the South Bay, I often help clients who are struggling with eating disorders of all types, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia and binge-eating. Eating disorders can become chronic, debilitating and even life-threatening conditions if not recognized and treated appropriately.
Symptoms
Eating disorders often develop during the teenage and young adult years, although they can develop at other ages as well. Some of the most common symptoms of eating disorders include:
- Chronic dieting
- Ongoing fluctuations of body weight
- A preoccupation over fat and calories in food
- Exhibiting certain eating behaviors such as eating alone or hiding food
- Being fixated with food, recipes or cooking
- Depression
- Avoiding family and friends wherein the person may become withdrawn or isolated
What Causes Eating Disorders?
Although the exact cause of eating disorders is not known, it is thought that a combination of biological, psychological and/or environmental/interpersonal issues all may be contributing factors in the development of these disorders.
- Biological Factors – Eating disorders often run in families. The risk of developing an eating disorder is 50-80% determined by genetics.
- Psychological Factors – Eating disorders often accompany other mental health problems like depression or anxiety, low self-esteem and feelings of lack of control.
- Environmental/Interpersonal Factors – Many people with eating disorders find it difficult to express their feelings and emotions. It is common for someone with an eating disorder to have a history of abuse or traumatic life event(s) or to have experienced bullying or teasing over their size or weight.
How Are Eating Disorders Treated?
Effective treatment for an eating disorder must address the symptoms and medical consequences, along with the psychological, biological, interpersonal and cultural forces that contribute to or maintain the disorder. Many people with eating disorders respond well to individual, group or family therapy and medical management provided by their primary care provider.
As a psychologist offering adult and teen therapy in Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach, I provide effective eating disorder treatment that addresses the underlying emotional and mental health issues which can date back to childhood and involve the person’s self-perception and self-image.
