Rethinking Your New Year’s Resolutions

Simplify

Do you often approach the new year with a long list of goals that you would like to accomplish?
Are these lists often unrealistic and maybe a little overwhelming? It may be time for a new
approach as setting goals like these often causes your initial well-intended enthusiasm to peter
out. Perhaps a different tactic is necessary? What if you prioritize your list of goals and choose the
one thing you would most like to accomplish this year?

Modify

Next, ask yourself what is one small action you can take each day to move in the direction of
achieving your goal? Small, consistent steps will allow you to slowly chip away at your goal and
realize significant progress. Too often we think that we have to make huge progress during each
step, and underestimate the advancement that can be made with a more consistent approach.

Reflect

Avoid the all-or-nothing method, where you do nothing toward your goal if it does not make a
significant impact. Think about one of the lessons learned from The Tortoise and the Hare, slow
and steady wins the race. This mindset will not only help you to build the momentum necessary
to continue to forge ahead with accomplishing your goal, it is also more sustainable.
