Overcoming the Holiday Blahs

Do the holidays sometimes catch you by surprise, making you feel unprepared, overwhelmed, and
unmotivated? You may be experiencing the holiday blahs. Here are a few tips to deal with some of the
feelings that sometimes accompany the holidays.

Take A Break

Do you need a break? Are you scheduling great activities for everyone else in your life, with the
exception of yourself? Make sure to make yourself a priority as well! Go for a walk on the beach
or somewhere in nature. Schedule a massage or relaxing activity for yourself where you can
reset. Taking this time for yourself will allow you to rest and be open to the holidays and
connecting with the people you love. This may mean you can’t say yes to every holiday event so
that you can schedule time to do something rejuvenating for yourself.

Reconnect

Reconnect with friends and family, or have coffee with someone you’ve been meaning to catch
up with over the last year. Connecting with others can help you to remember why you enjoyed
their company and feel more supported.

Reflect

Think about what you are thinking about… Capture those thoughts that may be bringing you
down before they affect your feelings, emotions, and behavior. What stories are you telling
yourself about the holidays? Are you fortunetelling that everything is going to go wrong? Or
maybe you are an all or nothing thinker, and choose to do nothing over taking a small step
forward that can yield major results? You can identify your cognitive distortions and replace
them with true factual statements that will help elevate your mood.
