Fall Self-Help Reading List
Even in the perpetual sunshine of greater Los Angeles, autumn is finally starting to set in – and if you’re like me, fall makes me want to curl up with a good book. Reading is a wonderful way to pass the time, but in addition to being a pleasurable hobby, reading can also be a way to learn more about yourself and improve your life. Similar to therapy, self-help books can teach us not only how to get better at certain skills or situations, but they can also help us become better people as a whole. Looking for a good book to read this autumn? Here are some of my favorite picks for your fall self-help reading list!
Best Self-Help Books to Read This Fall
Reading is good for us in just about every way, teaching us more about the world we live in, the people around us, and ourselves. So this fall, why not make a commitment to yourself to read at least one self-help book? To help you get started, I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite books to add to your self-help fall reading list. Reading one is a good place to start, but there’s no reason not to shoot for even more!
- Man’s Search for Meaning: This timeless book, written by Austrian neurologist, psychiatrist, and Holocaust survivor, Victor Frankl, is perhaps one of the most renowned English language books of the past century. It is a tour de force of all the best – and worst – qualities that make us human, providing an inspirational view of the human capacity to overcome anything. If you haven’t read it yet, it is without a doubt a must-read.
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: This book defines the self-help genre more than any other, and since it’s publishing 30 years ago, it remains one of the best. The principles in this book will serve you in every area of your life, and it’s a book you can return to again and again.
- How to Win Friends & Influence People: Part of what I love about this book is that the title is downright deceitful. While it sounds like a way to scam and control people, this book is a heartwarming reminder of how important it is to be kind to everyone we meet, making it a perennial presence in any self-help reading list.
- The Four Agreements: Another timeless classic, this book lays out, clearly and convincingly, a framework for living with integrity, letting go of needless worry, and giving your all to everything you do.
- The Will to Change: In this book, legendary feminist writer and theorist Bell Hooks examines the ways that patriarchal culture prevents men from loving and being loved, and how we as a society can move past these limitations. While I particularly recommend this book for men, it’s a fascinating read no matter your gender expression.
- Letters to a Young Poet: While it may not fall explicitly under the “self-help” category, this collection of letters written by famous poet Rainer Maria Rilke to another young poet is one of the most beautiful meditations on life, love, art, and joy that I’ve come across. It’s sure to be enlightening no matter what you’re looking to get from it.
